Rising Tides, and Silos
Recently. Forbes published a piece on the impact of siloed divisions on achieving organizational goals. The takeaway is that, while divisions are a good way to organize people, they put organizational goals at risk. Why? Individuals become focused on their own department’s goals and tend to lose sight of being a ‘team player,’ helping other departments achieve their own goals for the bettering of the overall company.
What gives? We know that ‘a rising tide lifts all boats,’ so why wouldn’t we focus on outcomes that help the greater good instead of our own agenda? What can be done to mitigate this tunnel vision?
Forbes tackles these questions with an interesting perspective. While the article focuses on separated divisions within organizational structures, I would venture to say that many of us maintain our own siloed perspective when it comes to bettering ourselves in our chosen professions.
When advising individuals entering the tech industry, I like to ask them about their plans for growth. Answers typically relate to skills often found in their particular line of work- which is great. It's rare, however, for anyone to talk about cross-training or picking up skills outside of their day-to-day responsibilities.
Cross-training beyond one’s silo has been proven to increase understanding of business practices, communication across organizations, and an overall ‘rising tide’ of one’s own marketable skills. It can be gained through online courses, workshops, or mentorship given by someone in a different role.
What’s stopping you from breaking out of your silo? If you have the desire to grow, maybe all you lack is a nudge in the right direction. Don’t let your current silo prevent you from achieving a better view of your industry and organization’s needs. Raise the tide of your skills, beyond your current silo, and experience a broadened view of your profession.
