Motivations to Climb

It's easy to settle.

I wrote three paragraphs about a situation I've encountered, but it's better to just skip to the 'lesson learned' and state - it's easy to settle.

It's hard making time for side projects or new learning opportunities at work. We're slammed, overworked, reaching our limits of what we want to do vs what we can do. It's easy to say, 'this is my set of daily responsibilities. I won't take on more because this amount is enough to get by.' It's easy to stop looking up and out, to be inspired to accept a new challenge.

I have a group of friends who share a similar background and work ethic. When we meet up (which we do regularly) we catch up on life changes, talk through professional issues, and, if I'm frank, hold each other accountable for achieving our goals. 'You're miserable at work? Find a new job.' 'You want a promotion? Go get it.' We're there to support and motivate one another, and that request of 'help me!' is unspoken but always understood.

These support structures can provide the reason, and the clarity, to keep climbing and exploring. You are your biggest strength and your biggest weakness. Don't let your doubts stop you from accomplishing what you've set out to do. Whether it's a group of friends, an advisor, or a mentor; if you are seeking motivation or direction then take the first step and tell someone you need help. If you ask enough times, you'll find someone to help you keep climbing.
